Watercolor Blow Art
Each day, Americans are estimated to use 500 million plastic straws. Being amongst the top 10 contributors of plastic pollution, it's crazy that it's also such an easy component of our daily lives (and our kids!) we could reduce and even eliminate. Today, I will be showing you guys a simple watercolor blow art without plastic or even wasting paper straws.
Kids' Samples
Materials (w/ substitutions in parenthesis)
A4 paper (watercolor paper)
watercolor paint
water color brush (anything to carry some paint over to the paper, since we're not making details with the brush)
black pen
sticky notes
Step 1:
Start with a color (or a mix of 2-3, I don't recommend more as it may all mix and turn brown) and add a GENEROUS amount of water. To tell that you have enough water/paint, on a mixing palette, you should be able to see through the paint + water mixture, but also not be able to see clear splotches in the mixture as if it's still partly pure water.
Dab large splotches of paint onto your paper surface. To blow it, grab a sticky note and roll it so that a straw is formed, with the sticky side holding it together.
NOTE: you only add the paint first if you're not doing the example for the funky hair drawing, because adding the paint after for these will smudge the pen ink. If you are, see the order below.
Step 2:
Draw in the design you want with a black pen AFTER the watercolor is dry to the touch. Don't wanna risk ripping the paper or trying to draw on wet paint! Every splotch has its own soul and I think it's important to let kids decide what they want their own creation to be, but I've found 4 random splotches and drew them into what I thought they could embody very well.
